The 300°C probe is not a catalog checkbox: cable strain relief, acoustic stack, wear face and temperature drift can turn readings into expensive fiction.
Path: Build three probe variants with a specialist ultrasonic transducer vendor; run 300°C thermal cycling, delay calibration and steel thickness correlation against certified reference blocks before freezing the probe interface.
8.2 [Certification]
Bluetooth radio approval, battery safety and IP claims cannot be waved through with a rugged-looking moulding.
Path: Use a pre-certified BLE module and obtain India WPC ETA through an authorised RF test lab; verify whether the supplied charger/battery falls under BIS CRS (IS 13252/IS 16046 as applicable), then commission IEC 60529 IP67 and IEC 60068 environmental testing at a NABL-accredited lab.
8.3 [Tooling]
Custom IP67 moulds and a hot-probe production line will happily consume the margin before volume arrives.
Path: Phase production: CNC/urethane pilot housings and purchased high-temperature probes for 50–200 units, aluminium soft tooling at 500–1,000 units, then hardened injection moulds and dedicated calibration fixtures only after contracted annual demand exceeds 1,000 units.
9. Prototype sequence
- 9.1Define thickness range, steel grades, minimum wall, accuracy, scan modes, probe geometry and 300°C duty cycle with two inspection agencies.The measurement specification drives probe physics, not the other way around.
- 9.2Build an electronics mule using a commercial high-temperature probe, pulser/receiver evaluation hardware and a tablet logging app.It exposes signal-to-noise, temperature drift and workflow failures before custom mechanics absorb money.
- 9.3Create 20–30 engineering units in CNC sealed housings; validate on certified thickness blocks and representative boiler/pipeline coupons.This establishes accuracy, repeatability, hot-contact behaviour and usable inspection ergonomics.
- 9.4Pilot with two inspection agencies for 8–12 weeks, including offline jobs, traceable reports, cloud sync and calibration recall.Field evidence will reveal the audit trail and reporting features that actually replace paper.
- 9.5Freeze design, complete WPC/BIS applicability review and NABL environmental/IP testing, then release soft-tool production.This sequence avoids certifying a design that field use has already proven needs revision.
