8. Gates to clear
8.1 [DFM]
The original all-aluminium, invisible side display and two full-wrap dials compete for wall thickness, display optics, antenna clearance and assembly tolerances.
Path: Build around an aluminium tube with a dedicated laser-perforated display strip, plastic RF end-cap, and TPE magnetic rings; validate with EVT CNC tubes before mould release.
8.2 [Certification]
Global Bluetooth and rechargeable-battery sale requires regional radio, EMC, material and transport evidence; metal-body RF performance must be stable.
Path: Use a pre-certified BLE module or qualified RF reference, then run FCC Part 15, CE RED/EMC/RoHS, UKCA, ISED Canada and UN 38.3/IEC 62133 battery testing through an accredited lab.
8.3 [Tooling]
The 10k BOM can stay below the US$19.60 criterion, but bespoke rings, hidden-display finishing and tooling pressure a US$49 retail model.
Path: Use one standard OLED size, common BLE/charging design and moulded TPE rings; fund hard tooling only after EVT/DVT proves yield and forecast supports 10k–20k units.
9. Prototype sequence
- 9.1Make a non-functional ergonomic model using CNC aluminium tube, 3D-printed end-caps and representative rubber rings.Confirms pen diameter, grip, ring separation, button feel and display viewing angle before electronics packaging.
- 9.2Build an EVT electronics mule with BLE board, battery, USB-C charging, OLED strip and magnetic ring sensors.Measures antenna performance, battery runtime, display readability and selector accuracy inside the target envelope.
- 9.3Produce 30–80 DVT units with laser-perforated display finish, plastic RF end-cap and production-intent flex/PCB.Validates optical concealment, RF margin, sealing, assembly sequence and user interaction under realistic conditions.
- 9.4Run a 300–1,000 unit pilot through the selected EMS and enclosure supplier, including functional test fixtures.Establishes yield, ring calibration time, cosmetic reject rate, landed cost and firmware update process before hard tooling.
- 9.5Submit production-intent units for FCC, CE RED, UKCA, ISED, RoHS and battery transport compliance testing.Closes the standard certification path before global shipment and catches RF or charging changes while revisions remain manageable.
