At 10,000 units, tooling adds roughly $9–18/unit: 11–45% of a $40–80 retail price before freight, channel margin and support. Launch at $59–79 DTC, or exceed 20,000 units, to avoid margin being eaten alive.

A true low-cost Android tablet will blow the cost target through display, memory, battery, OS maintenance and failure handling. Cute idea; wrong architecture.
Path: Freeze a no-radio MCU appliance: 3.5–4.3 inch TFT, six physical buttons, preloaded audio, USB-C charging, and one contract manufacturer DFM review before opening production moulds.
8.2 [Certification]
“Global” is not one certificate. Battery shipment, EMC and regional market access still apply even after radio is removed.
Path: Use an accredited test lab for CE EMC/RoHS and UKCA technical file, FCC Part 15B SDoC, and ISED Canada ICES-003; qualify the cell/pack to IEC 62133-2 and UN 38.3. For India, have a BIS consultant confirm CRS classification and register if the final product category is covered.
8.3 [Tooling]
At $40 retail, the $9–18/unit tooling burden at 10k leaves very little room for freight, returns or retail channel margin. Math remains stubborn.
Path: Pilot with CNC/SLA housings and 100–300 units, then commit to steel moulds only after paid demand. Sell initial production DTC at $59–79, omit the mains adapter, and target 20,000+ units before pursuing broad retail.
9. Prototype sequence
