8. Gates to clear
8.1 [DFM]
A tall stick with a top button, light pipe and USB-C connector can become a tolerance lottery if the industrial design stays vague.
Path: Freeze a two-part ABS/PC shell around a standard USB-C PCB; use SLA samples, then a CM-led DFM review, T1 aluminum/steel tooling trial, and fixture-based button/light tests.
8.2 [Certification]
“Global” is not one approval sticker. Wi-Fi and intentional-radiator rules still apply even when the job is merely red or green.
Path: Use an FCC/ISED modular-approved Wi-Fi module; run FCC Part 15 testing for the US, CE RED/EMC/RoHS for the EEA, and UKCA for the UK. Add ISED Canada and WPC ETA/BIS review for India only for regions actually sold; no mains adapter avoids separate adapter approvals.
8.3 [Tooling]
The $2.84 BOM works at 10k, but worldwide approvals and tooling can eat a $15 launch price alive if all regions are funded on day one.
Path: Launch one compliant regional SKU first, target $20-$30 retail initially, amortize $13k-$28k tooling across 10k units, then fund additional regional approvals from validated sales.
9. Prototype sequence
